William S. Hart Park is one of the most important cultural landmarks in the Santa Clarita Valley. The park encompasses 260 acres of rolling hillside in Newhall, anchored by the grand hilltop mansion that silent film star William S. Hart called home from 1925 until his death in 1946. Hart was the original screen cowboy — one of the biggest stars of early Hollywood. He built his estate on a working ranch surrounded by the rugged canyons and oak woodlands he loved. When he died, his will bequeathed the entire property to the County of Los Angeles for use as a public park and museum, ensuring that future generations could enjoy both the land and his extraordinary collections. The main mansion, known as La Loma de los Vientos (Hill of the Winds), is a stunning example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. Inside, visitors find Hart's personal collection of Western art by Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, Native American artifacts, and memorabilia from his film career. The ranch house below the mansion serves as an additional museum space. The grounds are home to a herd of American bison, barnyard animals, picnic areas, hiking trails, and expansive views of the valley. Heritage Junction Historic Park, operated by the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, sits within the property and preserves several relocated historic structures including the Saugus Train Station.
