Beyond Events: Hidden Gems &
Local Favorites
Not everything worth doing this week has a ticket or a start time. These are the canyons, walks, Old Town corners, and local rituals that Santa Clarita locals genuinely love — anytime, any day.

Placerita Canyon Natural Area
A quiet oak-lined canyon tucked into the foothills of Newhall — and the site near the legendary Oak of the Golden Dream, where the first documented California gold was found in 1842. Easy trails, picnic tables, and a small nature center make it a low-key local favorite.

Old Town Newhall After Dark
Main Street Newhall transforms after sunset — string lights, sidewalk patios, live music drifting out of a few bars, and the kind of slow-walk energy that doesn't really exist anywhere else in SCV. It's the closest thing Santa Clarita has to a neighborhood that feels like a small town.

South Fork Trail Along the Santa Clara River
A paved, mostly flat trail that hugs the South Fork of the Santa Clara River between Newhall and Valencia. Most people drive over it every day without realizing they can walk for miles right under the bridges.

William S. Hart Park & Museum
The hilltop ranch and Spanish Colonial mansion of silent Western film star William S. Hart — donated to the public, free to visit, and somehow under-the-radar even with longtime SCV residents. Bison still graze in the lower pasture.

Newhall Pass Open Space
A surprisingly large piece of preserved open space tucked between Newhall and the I-5 corridor. Network of dirt trails, big-sky views, and almost no crowds — locals who know it really know it.
