Heritage Junction Historic Park is the heart of Santa Clarita's preserved history. Located within William S. Hart Park in Newhall, this open-air museum is operated by the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society and brings together some of the valley's most important surviving structures in one walkable campus. The centerpiece is the Saugus Train Station, built in 1887 as a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad line connecting Los Angeles to San Francisco. It is one of the oldest surviving railroad depots in Southern California and was relocated to Heritage Junction in 1980 to save it from demolition. The station now serves as a museum with exhibits on the railroad era that transformed the valley. Also on display are Mogul Engine No. 1629, a restored 19th-century steam locomotive, and Southern Pacific Caboose No. 1119. Together they tell the story of how the railroad opened the Santa Clarita Valley to commerce and settlement. Other historic buildings at Heritage Junction include the Pardee House, an 1880s Victorian cottage; the Newhall Ranch House, one of the oldest surviving residential structures in the valley; and additional structures that document various periods of local history. The campus also serves as a venue for community events, educational programs, and school tours.
