Living in Los Olivos
Los Olivos is the wine-tasting heart of the Santa Ynez Valley — a tiny unincorporated village (population ~1,100) that punches far above its weight as one of the most concentrated wine-country tasting destinations in California. The downtown is a four-block walkable grid centered on the iconic Grand Avenue flagpole intersection, with 30+ tasting rooms, art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants all within a short walk.
Los Olivos was launched into national fame by the 2004 film Sideways — multiple scenes were shot at the Los Olivos Cafe and at vineyards in the surrounding hills, and the resulting tourism boom transformed the village. Many of the tasting rooms feature wines from estates in the surrounding Foxen Canyon Wine Trail and the Santa Rita Hills AVA.
Mattei's Tavern, restored by Auberge Resorts in 2023, is the historic 1886 stagecoach stop that anchors the village's heritage identity — now a luxury inn and restaurant. The Los Olivos Cafe & Wine Merchant remains the most photographed restaurant in the Valley.
Residential Los Olivos is small and intimate — a few hundred homes on tree-lined streets surrounding the downtown core, ranging from historic Victorian cottages to newer wine-country builds. Properties on the outskirts include large vineyard estates and ranches. The village's appeal as a place to live is the combination of walkable downtown, deep wine-country immersion, and small-town quiet outside the Saturday tourist hours.
