Ed Davis Park in Towsley Canyon is an 880-acre open space preserve managed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA), tucked into the hills just west of Interstate 5 between the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys. The park is named after former California State Senator Ed Davis, who championed open space preservation in the region. It protects a remarkably varied landscape — from the shaded, sycamore-lined banks of Towsley Creek at the canyon floor to the wind-swept ridgelines offering sweeping views of the Santa Clarita Valley, the Santa Susana Mountains, and on clear days, the Pacific Ocean. The centerpiece of the park is Towsley Gorge, a narrow sandstone canyon carved over millennia by seasonal water flow. The exposed rock layers reveal millions of years of geological history, including tilted sedimentary formations and natural tar seeps that hint at the region's oil heritage. Walking through the gorge feels like stepping into a different world — quiet, enclosed, and visually dramatic. The Don Mullaly Trail is the primary route, climbing from the trailhead through the canyon and up to the ridge. It can be combined with connector trails to form loops of varying length and difficulty. The lower canyon sections are relatively gentle and shaded, while the upper ridgeline segments are steeper, more exposed, and reward hikers with expansive views. Towsley Canyon is also open to mountain biking on designated trails, making it one of the few multi-use trail areas in the immediate SCV region. The mix of terrain — from creek crossings to rocky switchbacks to open ridgeline — offers a more immersive and adventurous experience than most neighborhood parks and paseos in the valley.
