An Irvine open-space gem — a former cattle camp turned hiking, biking, and ranger-led tour destination.

Bommer Canyon is the standout piece of Irvine's open-space network — a hidden coastal canyon south of Bommer Canyon Road that for decades was a working cattle camp. Today it's a managed open-space preserve with a mix of self-guided public access and Irvine Ranch Conservancy guided hikes, runs, and rides. The core trail system runs through oak and sycamore woodland in the canyon bottom and out onto exposed ridges with full panoramic views. Some trails require guided access; others are open self-guided during scheduled hours.

🌟 Why Locals Go Here

It's the wild Irvine — a piece of country most people drive past for years without realizing what's behind the gate.

What to Expect

Mix of self-guided and guided access, depending on the trail and day. Canyon bottom is shaded; ridges are exposed.

💡 Good to Know Before You Go

Check the Irvine Ranch Conservancy and City of Irvine schedule before you go — access varies by day. Free.

📍 Local Tip

Sign up for one of the Irvine Ranch Conservancy guided hikes — it's the easiest way to see the deeper reaches of the preserve.
