Vasquez Rocks Natural Area is one of the most visually striking landscapes in all of Southern California. Located in Agua Dulce on the northern edge of the Santa Clarita Valley, this 945-acre park features dramatic tilted sandstone formations that jut skyward at steep angles — the result of millions of years of tectonic activity along the San Andreas Fault. The rocks are named after Tiburcio Vásquez, a notorious California outlaw who used the formations as a hideout in the 1870s while evading law enforcement. Before that, the area was home to the Tataviam people, whose ancestral lands included this valley. The nature center on-site includes exhibits on both the geological and cultural history of the area. For film history enthusiasts, Vasquez Rocks is legendary. The distinctive formations have appeared in over 2,000 film and television productions, making them among the most filmed rock formations in the world. Notable appearances include the original Star Trek series, The Flintstones movie, Westworld, and countless Westerns. Today, the park offers free hiking, rock scrambling, horseback riding, and photography opportunities. Several trails wind through the formations, ranging from easy walks to more challenging scrambles up the rock faces. The park is open sunrise to sunset year-round.
