🌅 Sunset Views

The only California state beach where you can drive on the sand — a vast expanse of coastal dunes for off-roading, camping, and wide-open shoreline.

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is one of the most unique outdoor destinations on the West Coast — a sprawling complex of coastal sand dunes and beach where street-legal vehicles, ATVs, and dune buggies are permitted on the sand. Stretching south from Pismo Beach, the park draws off-road enthusiasts, campers, and beachgoers to its enormous open beach and towering dunes. Beyond the riding areas, the dunes hold deep ecological and cultural significance, with the adjacent Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve protecting rare habitat and the historic 'Dunite' artist colony lore. Even non-riders come to camp on the sand, fly kites, fish the surf, and watch the sunset over miles of uninterrupted shoreline. It's a wild, expansive, only-in-California stretch of coast where the desert seems to meet the sea.

🌟 Why Locals Love It

It's the rare beach where you can drive, camp on the sand, and ride the dunes — a true California original.

What to Expect

Miles of open beach, towering dunes, vehicle access, beach camping, surf fishing, and adjacent protected dune habitat.

💡 Good to Know Before You Go

Vehicle and camping access requires permits and is subject to seasonal closures and changing regulations — check current SVRA rules before going. Soft sand requires proper tires.

📍 Local Tip

Even without a vehicle, drive onto the hard-packed sand at low tide near the Pier Avenue entrance to find your own stretch of beach for a sunset picnic.
