Living in San Simeon

San Simeon is a tiny, remote coastal community on the far North Coast of San Luis Obispo County — best known to the world as the gateway to Hearst Castle, the legendary hilltop estate of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst that draws visitors from across the globe. Below the castle, the village itself is small and unpretentious: a cluster of hotels, a historic landing, and the original "old" San Simeon settlement near Sebastian's Store.

The setting is spectacular. William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach offers a protected cove, a fishing pier, and a launch point for kayaking, while just up Highway 1 the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery hosts thousands of seals year-round — one of the most reliable wildlife viewing spots in California. The historic Piedras Blancas Lighthouse marks the rugged point where the coastline begins its transition into the wild Big Sur country to the north.

This is where developed California essentially ends and the open coast begins. There's very little residential housing — San Simeon is far more a scenic, tourism-anchored gateway than a conventional neighborhood — but its handful of homes and lodgings enjoy some of the most dramatic, uncrowded coastline in the state.

The climate is cool, breezy, and marine. San Simeon is for people drawn to remote coastal beauty, wildlife, and history — the castle on the hill, the seals on the beach, and the wide-open Pacific stretching toward Big Sur.
