Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa (Old Mission Parish)
San Luis Obispo
The historic fifth California mission, founded in 1772, and a vibrant active Catholic parish in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo offering English and Spanish Mass.
About
Founded by Father Junípero Serra in 1772, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is both a beloved historic landmark and a living parish at the center of the city it gave its name. The whitewashed adobe church, shaded mission plaza, and creekside setting make it the spiritual and cultural heart of downtown SLO.
Why Visit
A rare blend of nearly 250 years of California heritage and a warm, active worship community — offering daily and weekend Mass in both English and Spanish, plus a museum and gardens open to all.
Historical Significance
The fifth of California's 21 Spanish missions, it pioneered the iconic red clay tile roof after fires destroyed its original thatched roofing. It remains the founding institution of the City of San Luis Obispo.
